Fraser’s Remarkable Transformation To Adapt To The Role
For the 90’s kids who grew up watching The Mummy, George of the Jungle, Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc, Brendan Fraser is a household name. And seeing this amazing actor win one of the best awards in the film is fulfilling.
Brendan Fraser won the best actor award at the 95th Academy Awards for his performance in the film, ‘The Whale’. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the mastermind behind spectacular films such as Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Fountain, Noah, Mother, etc, ‘The Whale’ portrays the struggles of an obese person.
Brendan acts as Charlie, a reclusive English teacher who is chronically obese and weighs around 600 lbs. He is struggling to reconnect with his estranged daughter while fighting the challenges of his health condition.
While in the preproduction stage itself, ‘The Whale’ has created quite a talk among movie circles. One thing this movie got much recognition for was because of the dramatic body transformation of Brendan Frazer.
For becoming Charlie, Brendan was subjected to heavy prosthetics and makeup along with CGI. It is a pure wonder to see the muscular heartthrob of the 90s ‌turn into the chronically obese Charlie in 2023.
The 54-year-old actor underwent a series of impressive transformations to adapt to the Oscar-winning performance. Along with him receiving the Best Actor award, the movie won the nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling category. The incredible transformation of Brenden Fraser raised many questions about his looks and how he managed to look like such a morbidly obese person.
The actor was supposed to gain weight before portraying the role of Charlie. But he couldn’t pile up enough weight for the role. To create a massive outlook, the actor was advised to wear 300 pounds (136 kg) worth of prosthetics.

Makeup and prosthetics designer Adrien Morot created these incredible and wearable prosthetics and had ‌previous work experience with the same director on Noah. This talented person is also behind movies such as The Revenant and X-Men: Days of Future Past where he created an amazing prosthetic suit with the help of digital sculpture and a 3D printer.
The production company behind the film posted a time-lapse that portrays the actor’s incredible transformation into Charlie. The video shows a devoted team of artists applying prosthetics to Fraser, who patiently sits along the whole procedure.
He had to spend at least eight hours daily in the make-up room to transform into the role. This itself shows that Brenden and his team are indeed Oscar-worthy!
