New Study, Infectious Diseases & Obesity During Pandemic Conditions
Even though people never gave too much consideration to their physical appearances at the beginning stage of obesity, they are much more concerned about it now than early days after getting more knowledge on the drawback it could bring in your life.
Various studies have proved obesity as a primary element that opens the gate for many hazardous diseases that could even result in the death of a person.
From the beginning of the widespread SARS-CoV-19 infection, obesity has played a crucial role in increasing the mortality rate of people who are affected by this disease.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people have been grouped into several categories based on their high risk of getting affected by the disease, among them, obesity has been determined as a factor that is ranked in the first position.
This is mainly because people belonging to this category is not only obese but also have a high chance of getting the influence of many chronic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.
The latest study published in the International Journal of Obesity has shown that the prevalence of obesity has increased by 13% around the globe. This has also increased the number of people getting at risk of being affected by this infectious disease and even many other severe health complications from chronic diseases.
The reason behind the high chance of obese people getting affected by infectious diseases is because of very low immunity either inborn or grown within and vitamin D deficiency according to some studies. Other than these two issues, several other factors also pave the way for increasing the risk of getting in the hold of many types of diseases.
Obesity could also increase the chances of being affected by urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections. It could even worsen your immune system leading to reduced cell functioning, microbiome imbalance, inflammatory disorders, and even reduce resistance.
The study was conducted by gathering cohort articles up to February 2021 and these were collected from PubMed (MEDLINE). As per the latest estimate published by the World Health Organisation(WHO), approximately 2.8 million people are dying per year because of difficulties associated with obesity.
When compared with the global estimation of obesity of 1975, over 1.9 billion people are overweight, and out of them, over 650 million are obese. And this makes obesity a pandemic that people all over the world faced before the SARS-CoV-19 pandemic.
From several studies on the relation between obesity and infectious diseases, it is proven that different types of viruses have a great impact on using fatty tissues as a reservoir. It is also found that non-obese people have a very low rate of mortality when compared with obese people who were affected by the same virus.
Also, people with higher BMI(27 and above) had many intense symptoms when compared with those with lower BMI(22 and low).
According to the study author Dr.Gabriella Pugliese, the participants of the study with obesity had a greater chance of getting affected by various infectious diseases, and also there are chances for increasing mortality rate in such people.
Therefore, it is very important to bring awareness among people about the growing risk of obesity and the increased mortality that comes after also, it is necessary to promote a better healthy lifestyle for a better tomorrow.
